Chapter 9

Bethany barely remembered her drive home. Her date with Kirk had put her in a hazy, deliriously happy fog. Luckily, when she crept into the dark apartment, she heard her father snoring peacefully from his room. Her brother had obviously already left, which meant she wouldn’t have to endure uncomfortable questions about her date with Kirk Sterling.

Several days later, she parked her battered old car in the parking lot of a shiny new office complex. Bethany grabbed her laptop bag and made her way inside.

“Hi, I’m here to see Naya Adeyemi,” she said to the secretary at the front desk. This appointment was super short-notice, but her date with Kirk had spurred her to action. Both their families needed closure. The truth was the only way to get that after all these years. Hopefully, her brother’s ex-girlfriend would be able to use her incredible tech skills to help.

Within moments, the secretary waved her through to a large office space. Large tables were set up as work stations for the computer programmers who worked at Naya’s tech company, Sprocket Innovations.

Though they hadn’t seen each other in nearly five years, Bethany instantly recognized the gorgeous woman sporting a chic afro puff motioning her to come over. She hurried across the room to Naya’s work station.

“Hey, Naya. It’s so good to see you again. Thanks for seeing me on such short notice,” Bethany said.

Naya greeted her with a smile. “No problem. Have a seat. Can I get you something? Coffee? Tea? We’ve got cookies.”

“Cookies and coffee sounds wonderful. Thank you.” She sank down into the comfy chair across from Naya.

Naya motioned to someone over Bethany’s shoulder, no doubt signaling to an assistant.

“This is quite a place you’ve got here,” Bethany said as she looked around. “Your dream finally came true.”

“And so has yours,” Naya said excitedly. “I can’t wait to hear all about it.”

“Well, nothing has been finalized yet, but I’m working on opening my fashion shop,” Bethany said.

“Congratulations! We need more women in business. Time for us to rule the world.” Naya grinned and leaned in closer. “Plus, when you do open the store, I’ll be able to say I got one-of-a-kind Bethany Walker originals before she opened a store.”

“Thanks. I really appreciate your confidence in me.” Bethany smiled, Naya already putting her at ease. When Naya had returned her call earlier that day, they had worked out the perfect way for Bethany to pay her for her services. Instead of money, Naya had requested that Bethany pay her in some clothes that she had personally designed. With Naya moving up in the business world, she was focused on crushing the competition with some killer looks.

“So, speaking of business, run this request by me again.”

Bethany cleared her throat and got Naya up to speed on her father’s recent release from prison. “The truth is, my family and the Sterlings are this close to being at each other’s throats again,” she said as she wound down the story. “I have to find out what the truth is so that we can put this feud to rest once and for all.
