CHAPTER 7

The phone rang, waking Natalie up from the troubling sleep. She hoped it was Paul calling to apologize for letting her down and asking her to come back home with her guests. Her face dropped as she read Julie’s name on the display. In spite of her rudeness and bossy attitude, Julie hadn’t disappointed Natalie. Hell, she even accepted operating on Manuel’s wife for free. Natalie straightened up in the bed as she hit the answer button.

“Good morning, Julie. Is something wrong? It’s only seven a.m.”

“Did I wake you up? Sorry for that. I thought you would want to know how our new patient is handling the BBF virus transfusion.”

Natalie rubbed her eyes and pushed the bed cover away. “Sure, how is she doing?”

“Well, she survived the night, which means one hundred percent chance of surviving the whole operation.”

“Great news! Manuel will be so happy to hear it.”

“All right, hey, how are your eyes?”

Because of the stress from the previous night, Natalie had forgotten the problems with her eyes. She stood up and checked her eyes in the mirror. No redness shadowed her bright green eyes.

“They seem to be OK.”

“Great. Come to my place anyway so we can have lunch together and go over the details of the European Tour.”

Hearing her stomach growl, Natalie accepted the offer readily and hung up. She thought of calling room service, but decided instead on paying a short visit to one of the hotel restaurants in order to be seen and meet her part of the deal with the hotel manager.

After a quick shower, she put on an apricot, knee-length chiffon dress she found in the dresser and checked her look in the mirror. Even if she weren’t a “trendy topic,” the stunning look she saw in the mirror would suffice to turn all heads. Covering her bare shoulders with her thick blond hair, she went to Manuel’s room, but found him talking on the phone. In order not to disturb him, she wrote on a piece of paper that she would be back in half an hour and left it on the small table by their room.

At the reception desk, her looks attracted attention just as she had guessed. Too much attention perhaps, but Natalie didn’t care. The manager ran to her side as she entered the restaurant and helped her sit at a central table. Natalie glanced at the other guests watching her, all looking mesmerized. After a few seconds of staying motionless, many held out their phones to take her picture, some without caring about being obvious, others more cautious. Natalie smiled and ordered an omelet with mushrooms and orange juice. The manager nodded and gestured to the waiter who stood beside her. She watched the manager and the waiter leave as she settled in her chair.

A familiar sound startled her and she turned around. Paul was walking toward her, his face darker and more wrinkled than she’d seen before, probably from sleeplessness.

Seeing him cheered her up. She stood up and threw her hands around his shoulders.
