Leroy and Donald arrived at Hudson’s ranch in the late afternoon. The sun was still shining brightly, and a few white clouds kept it from burning them as they rode.

They paused at the perimeter of Hudson’s property to discus the best way to go about things. “We can’t just knock on the door and demand to talk to Mary,” said Leroy. “Hudson will want to know why.”

“You’re assuming he’s even there. It could be he’s somewhere else entirely right now,” said Donald.

“Could be,” said Leroy, but the didn’t think they should take chances. Anyway, even if Hudson wasn’t at home, Mary may not let them in without a good reason. And Hudson had a lot of ranch hands to help keep them back.

“What if we just confront her with the truth?” asked Donald. “Tell her we know what Hudson’s been doing and we know she’s been helping him.”

“I don’t know if ‘helping’ is the right word,” said Leroy. If Mary was bruised and beaten, then it seemed to him the odds were more likely whatever help she was giving Hudson was against her will.

Still, confronting her with the truth was not such a bad idea. They could offer to help protect her from Hudson and his men if she agreed to help them. Hudson could end up going away for a long time. If he was proved guilty of leading the raids on Clear Water’s ranchers, he would probably be hanged. Then Mary would really have nothing to worry about.

They talked things over another few minutes and decided the best way to go about it all would be to see how many of Hudson’s men were out and about on the ranch today. If they could avoid running into any of them, that would be for the better.

Maybe they’d get lucky and find Mary wandering outside alone. Did Hudson have a garden she might be found working in? They weren’t sure and set off to find out.

They tied their horses off and set out over Hudson’s land on foot, carefully making their way towards the house. They used the trees as cover where they could, and tried to keep their pace steady and slow. No sudden movements that might alert Hudson or anyone else to their presence.

They made it all the way to the back of Hudson’s house. There was a garden, but there was no Mary outside tending to it. They could wait out here all day and she might never show herself. For all they knew, she was not even at home.

Donald and Leroy spoke in whispered tones. “I don’t see anyone,” said Donald. “It seems strange with all the hands Hudson has working for him.”

That was true. Hudson employed at least two dozen men, or so Leroy had heard. Surely some of them must be outside tending to the cattle. Yet they’d made their way across the land without seeing even one person.

The back door suddenly opened and Hudson stepped out. Someone followed after him, shutting the door behind them.
