Chapter Eleven

It was near the end of the party that Saffron noticed Mac watching her. She walked to the cake and peeked at him—his eyes were on her. She chatted with Drew and the kids and he was still observing everything she did.

Finally, Saffron met his gaze and returned it blink for blink. Mac turned away. Saffron wondered if he wanted her to know that he knew that she had seen him in the garden. She needed to find out if he had hidden the gun out there. If he had it on him, obviously it couldn’t be that. She crossed the room and stood at his elbow until he turned to meet her gaze.

“That was a great show,” she said, hoping her tone was convincing.

He shrugged, “It wasn’t bad for what we had to work with.”

“I’ve been wondering something, though,” she said directly.

“Shoot,” Mac held his hands wide in an invitation.

“I was just curious how accurate that cake topper is. Something looks a little off to me, like maybe the golden fish has an extra rib or something.”

Surprised, Mac glanced at the refreshment table, “Looks pretty good to me.”

“Still,” Saffron studied it, trying to convey an air of innocence, “Hey, didn’t you have it engraved on your gun? Could I compare the two?”

There it was. The flash of guilty panic in his eyes at the mention of the gun. He began to stammer, “Well, I, I, can’t show it to you right now, this isn’t the place for it.”

Saffron was immediately glad she’d chosen to ask him about it in front of so many other people. Mac was definitely hiding something. Her need to know made her bold.

“Oh, just let me take a quick peek,” Saffron said, reaching for his jacket, “Just at the handle!”

Mac twisted away and clamped his elbow down to his side, but not before Saffron was able to catch a glimpse of his empty holster.

Mac scowled at her, but before he could say anything, Trista grabbed his other arm and asked him a question. Mac fixed Saffron with a warning gaze that sent a chill all the way through her.

That chill followed her all the way back to her room. When she locked the door, she couldn’t help but double-check it.

It was late—past midnight—but Saffron wasn’t ready for bed yet. She needed to unwind, to strategize. As the party had broken up downstairs, Maggie had come into the room and announced that the fire was still raging, and it looked like they’d be spending at least another couple of days together.

The news didn’t bother Saffron. She had a newfound resolve, and she welcomed more time to explore the mansion and grounds. She still believed that the garden held Mac’s secret, and if something had been done to the intruder, then Leland had a secret, too.

But tonight she would rest. She walked into the ornate bathroom. It was tiled with glass and marble squares that made an intricate pattern on the floor and halfway up the walls.
