We couldnât stand around on that dreadful street much longer. Toby didnât need to tell us that we werenât safe. The very air around us felt dangerous. And I was sure the vampire weâd watched kill that innocentâwell, I suppose we didnât know for sure whether he was innocent, but man nonethelessâcould be back at any moment, and it probably wasnât the only one.
We needed to do something, and there was only one possibility that seemed plausible at all.
âIf you relate as well as you say you do, we need your help.â I considered my words for a moment and decided to just lay it all out there. âPlease. You need to take us to whoever is in charge.â I knew it probably wasnât a good idea to go visit with monsters, but thatâs what my gut was telling me to do. When all else failed in life, all you had left was instinct and a quest for survival.
âI doubt you will make it out of that basement alive.â Toby looked up at the sky. âAnd I care. Maybe I shouldnât, but I do. I still have a soul after all.â There was a note of surprise in his voice, as if he were taken aback by the truth in his statement.
âBasement?â I repeated the word. Our language seemed a slight bit off from his, but I knew the word enough.
âYes, they took over the former Society headquarters in the basement of the Crescent City Hotel.â Toby returned his gaze to me. The surprise was gone and replaced by a deep sadness. Whatever that hotel was, he had a history there. âAnd you have no idea about the Society or the Crescent City Hotel.â
âNo. Canât say I do.â There was no reason to pretend otherwise. It didnât change anything.
âNor can I.â Knoll put his arm around me. His touch simultaneously caused a wave of relaxation and excitement to surge through me.
I looked at him. Iâd spent plenty of time looking at him, but that didnât lessen the intense attraction I felt. I wondered how I hadnât picked up on our true connection immediately.
Toby glanced between us and then sighed. âI can take you over there, but then Iâm going to have to go inside with you.â
âWhy?â We would take any assistance we could get, but that didnât mean we expected any.
âBecause Iâm not going to have any more blood on my hands.â He looked down at his hands. âAlthough my wife would kill me if I died. Yes, I know how that sounds. It was a matter of speechâ¦â
âThere is no need for you to risk yourself. Merely take us there. We can handle ourselves.â I wasnât blind to the fact that anything he did was risky, but that didnât mean I expected him to do anything beyond what was absolutely necessary.
âIâve already told youââ
I didnât let him finish. âAnd you arenât the only one who doesnât want blood on your hands.â I felt guilty enough to the people of my court for not preparing better.
