AUTUMN

We couldn’t stand around on that dreadful street much longer. Toby didn’t need to tell us that we weren’t safe. The very air around us felt dangerous. And I was sure the vampire we’d watched kill that innocent—well, I suppose we didn’t know for sure whether he was innocent, but man nonetheless—could be back at any moment, and it probably wasn’t the only one.

We needed to do something, and there was only one possibility that seemed plausible at all.

“If you relate as well as you say you do, we need your help.” I considered my words for a moment and decided to just lay it all out there. “Please. You need to take us to whoever is in charge.” I knew it probably wasn’t a good idea to go visit with monsters, but that’s what my gut was telling me to do. When all else failed in life, all you had left was instinct and a quest for survival.

“I doubt you will make it out of that basement alive.” Toby looked up at the sky. “And I care. Maybe I shouldn’t, but I do. I still have a soul after all.” There was a note of surprise in his voice, as if he were taken aback by the truth in his statement.

“Basement?” I repeated the word. Our language seemed a slight bit off from his, but I knew the word enough.

“Yes, they took over the former Society headquarters in the basement of the Crescent City Hotel.” Toby returned his gaze to me. The surprise was gone and replaced by a deep sadness. Whatever that hotel was, he had a history there. “And you have no idea about the Society or the Crescent City Hotel.”

“No. Can’t say I do.” There was no reason to pretend otherwise. It didn’t change anything.

“Nor can I.” Knoll put his arm around me. His touch simultaneously caused a wave of relaxation and excitement to surge through me.

I looked at him. I’d spent plenty of time looking at him, but that didn’t lessen the intense attraction I felt. I wondered how I hadn’t picked up on our true connection immediately.

Toby glanced between us and then sighed. “I can take you over there, but then I’m going to have to go inside with you.”

“Why?” We would take any assistance we could get, but that didn’t mean we expected any.

“Because I’m not going to have any more blood on my hands.” He looked down at his hands. “Although my wife would kill me if I died. Yes, I know how that sounds. It was a matter of speech…”

“There is no need for you to risk yourself. Merely take us there. We can handle ourselves.” I wasn’t blind to the fact that anything he did was risky, but that didn’t mean I expected him to do anything beyond what was absolutely necessary.

“I’ve already told you—”

I didn’t let him finish. “And you aren’t the only one who doesn’t want blood on your hands.” I felt guilty enough to the people of my court for not preparing better.
