Using open questions

An open question encourages an expansive answer, as opposed to a closed question, which typically prompts a one-word “yes” or “no” response. Frame open questions by starting with the words, “What”, “When”, “How”, “Which”, “Who” or “Why”. If you ask open questions, such as, “What were the main learning points?”, an appraisee is far more likely to express their ideas than if you ask a closed question, such as “Did you achieve this objective?” Look at the objectives you will be reviewing and come up with an open question to start the discussion on each one.
