The old truck was surprisingly reliable, despite being a terrible gas hog. We got a few hours outside of town before needing to stop. Luckily, there was a greasy spoon diner next to the gas station because I was now starving.

We had just enough money to get cheap breakfast sandwiches and coffee that would probably work better as industrial cleaner than an actual beverage. Instead of eating in the car though, we ended up sitting at some picnic tables out in front of the diner. I was half way through the egg white and bacon sandwich when I noticed Alexis sneaking glances at me with an amused smile on her face.

"What?" I asked.

"Bacon? I'll have you appreciating a gas station hot dog in no time."

I snorted and shook my head.

"I wouldn't go that far, but I have to admit that every once in a while, this isn't so bad."

"Damn straight. So, I snagged this map from the diner, because some of us aren't a human GPS and I need to know which direction we're going."

Even a day ago, that statement would have set off alarm bells in my head as I wondered why she needed to know this so bad. Today, I knew it was just Alexis. She didn't like being in the dark, it made her feel out of control, and that was something I could understand.

I pointed at where we were and then up north to the mountain range that was getting ever closer.

"The pass is here," Alexis pointed, "but I'm guessing that what we're looking for is going to be a bit off the beaten path."

I nodded uneasily. This where the map had been a little unclear and I was nervous about getting us lost.

"It's a series of markers," I said, crumpling up my sandwich wrapper. "We will need to take logging road 7, which will probably appear closed. From there, it's going to be a matter of looking out for the markers that tell us whether we keep going or turn down a road."

Alexis frowned, took a sip of coffee and then made a disgusted face.

"Oh god!" she stuck her tongue out and winced. "Did they make this last week?"

I grimaced and nodded as she reached for my cup.

"I'll get them to make a fresh pot."

"Only if it's free, we can't afford to splurge on anything."

She nodded before marching into the diner. Our lack of funds was worrying me. If I could shift without it laying me out after, I could probably fly us the last bit of the way. But if this was withdrawals, it was going to take time to purge it all from my system. And with Craig and his men still out there, it wasn't a good idea for me to be weakened. I might be able to talk him down, but not if I was a sweating, shaking mess that couldn't think straight.

But the other thing haunting the back of my mind was that somehow my ability to shift would likely get back to the Secret Archive and they'd force me into the field.
