It would have been proper of her to resist being in Porterâs arms, but Darcy didnât feel like being proper. His warm embrace made her feel safe and protected, something she hadnât felt in a long time. She laid her head against his chest and could feel his heartbeat through his layers of clothing.
She closed her eyes as she relished this moment. Her ruggedly handsome husband was not truly hers, and this intimate position was entirely inappropriate. But why did it feel so right?
After a long moment, Porter leaned back, but he didnât release her from his arms. âI thought you had left.â
âLeft where?â
He sighed. âI donât know. I came home to a darkened cottage, and I just,â he hesitated, âI got scared.â
Unsure of his meaning, she asked, âScared about what?â
He dropped his arms from around her waist and brought them up to cup her face. âI thought you left me, and it petrified me.â
âOh, Porter,â she whispered. âI wouldnât have left without saying goodbye.â
Frown lines appeared next to his lips. âYou have thought about leaving?â
She gave him a perplexed look. âOf course, I have. We are not truly married. After this case, we will get an annulment and go our separate ways.â
Scoffing, Porter dropped his hands and stepped back. âHow silly of me. You are correct.â His words were devoid of emotion.
âIsnât that what you want?â
Porter shifted his gaze over her shoulder. âAt the beginning, yes. But nowâ¦â His words stilled as his eyes roamed her face. âI have spoken out of turn. This is not the time to discuss such things.â
She pulled out a chair at the table and sat down. âI agree. We are in the middle of a case.â
âNo, you are in the process of trying to get yourself killed with your outlandish actions,â Porter growled.
Her expression turned determined. âNo man has the right to control me,â she paused, âand that includes you.â
Porter reached for a chair and yanked it back. âI am your trainer. My job is to ensure you donât get yourself killed.â
âThat stunt back in the valley was not you trying to train me,â Darcy informed him. âThat was you trying to control me.â
Leaning his forearms on the table, Porter declared, âThere is a murderer loose in those hills and you were just traipsingâ¦â
She let out an exasperated sigh. âI was not traipsing. I thought to myself that a cave would be a fantastic place to hide a body, and I went in search of any opening.â
âYou are going to be the death of me, Darcy Shaw,â Porter stated. âWhere do you think a murderer would hide? Out in the open?â He shook his head. âNo, he would hide in a cave.â
Even though she was secretly pleased that he called her Darcy Shaw, she could not let him get the upper hand. âAdam was with me, and I was carrying a derringer.â
âForgive me,â Porter drawled, âI was mistaken. You obviously were not being lax about your safety.â
Darcy frowned. âHas anyone ever told you that you are infuriatingly annoying?â
âNo.
