Chapter 11
Luckily for my head and its ache, the rest of the day unfolds normally, more or less, if you leave out how weird the shipâs atmosphere has been since JC introduced his new rules.
The next day, I wake up in my pod feeling refreshed. My migraine is gone. Iâd almost forgotten what it was like to move around without it hammering up there. Itâs the same with every headache. I feel like it will never end, and then it passes; I feel alive again, and then it starts all over. Over and over. This time, I plan on taking advantage of feeling strong. I open my eyes and the door to my pod, and everything seems much clearer than the day before.
Itâs still very early as I head toward the Cafeteria with determination.
When I get there, itâs empty, as I expected. Nobody is awake at this time, which suits me well. I throw back a hearty breakfast at full speed without wasting any time. (Thereâs no cake left anyway.)
Iâve thought about it, and Iâve come up with a battle plan for the day ahead. Since we are stuck in here with a virus that can turn anyone into a bloodthirsty killer, I have to come up with a defense strategy, and quickly. Thanks to what Doc told me, Iâve also got a bit of a head start on my crewmates.
I want to be able to quickly identify the culprit by cross-checking what Doc said and what Iâve observed. (I really hope that thereâs only one imposter, although I canât rule out the possibility of there being more.) But to do that, Iâve got to do meticulous investigative work and be the soul of discretion. Itâs going to take a lot of time. More time than Iâve got with all the tasks I have to do on the Skeld. So Iâm up early. Iâve got to do as much as I can before the rest of the crew wakes up so I have time to watch and record everything they do without getting caught. Finding motivation I never knew I had, I roll up my sleeves (so to speak) and get to work.
After an hour and a half, Iâve already completed more than half of my tasks. Iâm quite proud, even if my head is spinning from all this running around. Itâs time to give myself a well- deserved break. I leave Storage and head for Security.
My crewmates are starting to wake up. On my way, I see Janelle, who is coming out of Electrical, and Flavius, who is heading from the Upper Engine to the Reactor.
Each time, we only exchange a brief wave.
I open a blank document on my visor and carefully make a note of the name of the person I pass, along with the time and place I saw them. You never know. If thereâs an emergency meeting, it could come in handy.
When I get to Security, the room is empty. Iâm a bit worn out, so I pull the chair out and sit down comfortably in front of the monitors.
