* “Iron-clad” documents were issued by the Germans to VIPs such as the Ger Rebbe, who traveled from Poland abroad via Berlin.

† The Polish word placόwki refers to areas where forced labor squads worked outside of the ghetto, a much desired job often acquired through bribes.

* SD stood for Sicherheitsdienst, or “Security Service.” Established in 1931 as an intelligence service for the SS to control dissent, the SD eventually became an important agent for the extermination process.

† Kocioł, “cauldron,” also connoted a closed-off area, such as a street, an apartment house, or even a basement. Israel Gutman, Resistance: ne Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1994), p. 140, referred to the “cauldron” decree that placed the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto in an area shaped like a cauldron. It was a word that, of course, had a sinister meaning.

* “Uttered words” (Latin).

† From the Polish word kombinować, this phrase was a common wartime expression for making “deals,” mostly illegal.
