Her eyes were shining pools of bitter chocolate- the expensive, fancily wrapped kind that looked delicious until you take a bite and then start choking, reaching for the nearest Hershey’s.

“I knew you were still my son,” Ondira said.

I wanted to smack her. “Are you joking, Mother?” I asked, voice rough. “You’ve made me betray my mate in order to save my best friend. I am not your son.”

She shrugged, uncrossing her legs. She rose from the chair and approached me. I forced myself not to flinch when she kissed my cheek.

“You’ll thank me when you’re older,” she said. “A mate makes you weak. The weak don’t survive.”

“Is that why you killed my father?”

I was watching her closely, the question casual, but she just smiled. It had been worth a shot. Maybe one day she’d slip and I’d have the truth.

She motioned to her soldier, carrying an unconscious Marsalis over his shoulder, and we proceeded to the elevator. She paused briefly.

“Where is that lazy bitch?” she asked, a snap in her tone. I assumed she was referring to the receptionist whose seat she’d been sitting in when I’d arrived. A moment later a young woman came running into the lobby to take the seat, face tight and eyes downcast. Ondira sniffed then turned to enter the elevator.

She punched in a keycode and it descended to the basement level. A cliché, I knew, but there was a reason for them. Drains being one. Soundproofing another. Lack of light a third... and so on.

The door slid open to reveal a nondescript hall lined by a series of doors. I walked with her, refusing to look and see who might be occupying the cells since I’d left. Forcing my heart to remain calm, I counted doors as we walked, suppressing a sigh of relief when she stopped in front of the expected one. Years ago, she’d had a special room built especially for Marsalis- I’d counted on her utilizing it now. Now I could only pray to the werewolf gods that she hadn’t had the presence of mind to change the codes. Not that she knew I knew them- but it would be like her to anticipate an eventuality like that.

Marsalis began to stir as we stepped inside. I looked around, stiffening. I’d seen it before, of course, but seeing it again disturbed me. Even though my mother had her issues, she wasn’t naturally cruel. The other cells were no better or worse than normal units I’d seen in the county jail. A plain bunk, washstand, and toilet. Colorless walls and nothing but a slit in the door to let in light. This cell, however, was outfitted with silver chains attached to the walls. In the corner was a tall cabinet that I knew was stocked with specific implements Ondira fully intended to utilize to make my mate’s stay unpleasant. I never had found out what exactly the malice between them originated with- and I realized now that my lack of curiosity had been an egregiously stupid oversight.
