Hardy and Anet make a show of their foxtrot, weaving through the dancing couples, while I attempt a cotillion with the baker’s pasty daughter. Simon, the blacksmith’s precocious youngster, does an impressive fire dance at the herb garden’s gate – with no ill effects, fortunately.

It’s not until daybreak that Michel latches his piano accordion shut and settles it deep inside its maroon velvet case. La vie est belle …
