ANSEL ADAMS ON THE MOON
Itâs a question of contrastâthe issue is middle gray,
and just when you think youâve metered it,
It nails you to the wall. If I look at enough of these photographs
I get tired of Ansel Adams, bored with the way he thinks.
I hunger for something odd of Westonâs, or give it up altogether
and go back to a sublimely ugly burgher by Vermeer.
Adams worked so slowly for the lyric, his craft so absolutely conscious,
that half his subjects died waiting for the shutter to fall,
And the other half gave up and looked for different work,
or stood in line at a soup kitchen in Santa Fe, holding out
Their stony hands for menudo and a white tortilla scrap. But then
I come across the moon, weightless over Hernandez,
New Mexico, still exactly the way it was that day it surprised him
at 4:05 p.m. local time, October 31, 1941. It was Halloween,
Nine years before I was born. Adams says nothing of that.
How could he leave out the American Day of the Dead?
How could he forget I was waiting to appear? Heâd spent hours failing
to satisfy himself with the stump of a cottonwoodâit refused
To be imagined. And here was the moon as heâd never seen it.
He had two minutes and thirty-seven seconds to capture it
Inside the massive 8Ã10 Deardorff before the scene eroded,
no time even to meter, but he realized he knew the exact
Luminance, how much light the moon threw down (250 c/ft2),
so he dialed it in and the world stood still. Down in the village, kids
Were dressing up as zombies and unborn poets. One wore my face and wove
down the haunted avenues. I was still almost that boyâs lifetime
From coming into focus, still nearly a decade from the aperture,
but the moon rolled on against the film of the darkening sky,
While inside the cameraâs negative spaceâall because the Maestro knew
his lightâits soul waited to be dodged and burned.
