We leave Starbucks, and since it is Charlotte’s birthday, I would love to celebrate with a gift for her. The dinner at Café Andaluz was my treat, but I always think it’s nice to give something that is durable and can continue to be appreciated.

“What would you like for your birthday?” I ask, as we stand for a moment in the bright sunlight in front of Starbucks.

She laughs and says, “You know, Greg, when a person is past sixty-five, each day is a gift. I have seven gifts a week and three hundred sixty-five a year.”

“I’m sure you feel that way, but isn’t there anything you need or want or that would give you pleasure to use or look at?”

“Can’t think of a thing. Except, maybe, to solve this bizarre crime we’re hooked into.”

“You can give yourself that gift. I’m not equipped to present such a complex present.”

“Solving a crime is a matter of clearing one’s mind of the extraneous details, sorting out the several clues, following up on promising leads, and finally getting the suspects lined up for the big finish.”

“Is that what you’re planning, another climactic ending like with Claire last year?”

“It’s not a whimsical wish for some sort of high drama. I truly believe that when characters in a sordid event can interact with each other, revelations occur. Confrontation breeds disclosure. Ire is tweaked, and people become candid and accusative, which stirs denial, which stirs admissions, which, many times, end up in truth.”

“Wow! Quite a scenario—and I have no doubt you are correct. When do we arrange such an assembly?”

“Not at that point yet. A few loose ends are still floating around in the breeze.”

“So, what’s next? Where do we go from here?”

“Hartunian knows things he doesn’t know he knows. I would like to probe a bit and shine a light on the facts his forensics people have reported. And besides that, I’m curious about Harry Mallette’s new information on Zena’s history. Penny will be checking in with us, I’m sure.”

“I just thought of something. I haven’t seen a DVD player in your apartment. Could that be a present you might like?”

She looks at me as if through a smudged window, squints, and says, “Oh, Greg, here I think of myself as such a high-tech person. I have a computer and know how to Google for information, have a cell phone and can be reached anywhere on the planet, but, dear brother, I am ashamed to say, I don’t know what a DVD is.”

I laugh. Am I, at last, one up on my crafty older sister?

“It’s an electronic device that plays movies and videos on a disc, and one can record on such a disc, even though it’s against the law, from watching a television program, or even from one’s own camera. Of course, you can buy programs, from Broadway shows to Hollywood movies, at any electronics store.”

“Ah. Well, indeed, I do not have such a device.”

“I’m going to disappear for a couple of hours, and when I return, you will have the necessary equipment.
