Chapter Thirteen

We don’t slow down until we’re in the parking garage below the hospital and Mitchell’s Explorer is in sight.

“I can’t believe we just busted you out of the hospital.” He pulls his keys from his jacket pocket and unlocks the car.

We get in, and he pulls out, trying to appear casual as he hands the parking ticket and a five-dollar bill to the woman in the ticket booth at the exit gate. Mitchell smiles at her and says, “Keep the change.”

She blushes as she raises the gate for us.

This time I don’t complain about his flirting. We need to get far away from the hospital. “So, what’s the penalty for fleeing a hospital without being properly checked out?” I ask him.

“Relax. Your dad will fix this.” He pulls onto the main road. “Where to? Your office?”

“No. We need to go to the station. I meant it when I said I need to see that ransom note again.”

“First, you need to eat something and take a shower.”

I discreetly try to sniff myself. Living in the same clothes for two days isn’t exactly leaving me smelling fresh as a daisy, but I don’t stink. “No time. I’ll clean up once Veronica is home safe.”

“From the way you screamed, Veronica needs a trip to the ER.” He turns his head toward me. “Speaking of, how are you feeling?”

“Fine now.” Usually sleeping after a vision that bad fixes whatever ailment I’m suffering from. I look at the clock on the dashboard. 1:17. I must have been out for about four hours.

“I’m driving you home, ordering Chinese, and telling your dad to meet us there with the ransom note.” I open my mouth to protest, but Mitchell holds up his hand. “At least then, if you need to recover from whatever it is you see, you’ll be in the comfort of your own home and no one will call an ambulance.”

It was stupid of me to have a vision in a public place. The other police officers and detectives know about my abilities, but there were civilians around. I should have known it would end badly.

“I was careless. It’s not like me, but this case is so damn frustrating.”

“What’s different about this case?” he asks, but his voice hitches at the end, signifying he knows the answer already.

He’s what’s different. In the past, it was always Dad and me working the cases together. I didn’t worry about what I’d see or feel because it was only Dad. Now I have this guy watching me in my most vulnerable moments. It’s affecting me. And even though we’ve reached an agreement and are trying to get along, it’s still something that I have to get used to. I need time, but Veronica doesn’t have time. Her head injury could end up causing her death if William doesn’t know how to deal with it. She was knocked out by the chloroform when Rocky kicked her. Sleeping and concussions don’t mix. I can’t be sure she’s still alive. When I notice Mitchell is still waiting for a response, I simply shrug.
