After swallowing his bite of steak, Ollie asked with a smile, âSo, you know about my family. What about yours?â
âLike yours, mine is alsoâ¦â Noble trailed off with a grimace.
âAh.â Ollie winced. âSorry.â
âItâs been a long time.â
âWhy does it always feel like there is more meaning when you say that?â
Noble shrugged with a chuckle. âMy parents have been gone for a while, and well, I suppose I should confess this now⦠I was married.â
His brow rose at that, though it wasnât necessarily shocking, since the man was forty. Plenty of time to fit a marriage and a divorce into those years. âWere you?â
âYes, to a woman.â
Ollie was slightly relieved by that. Negative feelings towards those who were bi or pan were still pretty prevalent in the community, along with the whole bi-erasure thing. âOh, are you bi, or pan? As am I!â
âAh, no. Iâm gay.â Noble sighed. âIâm afraid I was hiding at that point in time.â
Yeah, he had jumped the wrong way conclusion-wise. If the man had married in his early twentiesâ¦well, it wasnât exactly uncommon back then, and it hadnât even been ten years since marriage equality passed in the States.
âSo, you got divorced when she found out, or when you finally told her?â
Nobleâs eyes got this far off look to them, and this hint of sadness. âI never got the chance. She died before ever knowing. Before I hurt her.â
âIâm sorry,â Ollie said softly. âYou loved her, didnât you? In your own way.â
The man blinked, his gaze meeting his, with a small smile on his face. âI did. She was my best friend, which I suppose made what I had been doing all the more cruel, but I did love her in the only way I could. It was enough for me at the time to be happy.â
âShe must have been really young when she passed.â
âSheâ¦â Noble trailed off, his expression dimming. His eyes filled with clear anger as his mouth pulled into a tight line. âSheâ ââ
âIâm sorry,â Ollie blurted out. âWe should change the subject.â
âShe wasââ The man shook his head, cutting off. âYouâre right, we should change the subject. This is far darker than is good on a first date.â
Itâs not that it was dark, itâs that the man clearly had no interest in sharing it. âI want to know all about you, Noble, even the dark things. But just because I want to know, doesnât mean you should share anything you arenât comfortable with.â
