CHAPTER 4

RENNA

“He’s not going to like this,” Gracya says, her arms full of the beautiful dresses that she has given me these past weeks.

I roll my eyes. “It’s his room. I don’t see why he’d be upset with me moving out of it.” I toss one more dress over her waiting arms, and shoo her away with my hand.

She looks back at me with irritation in her hazel eyes. “I can carry more than this, you know.”

I watch as her arms shake a little from the weight of the clothes. It’s not a lot, but she’s weaker than she should be. I don’t tell her that, though.

“I’ll only be right down the hall. I can always come back for the rest when I need it. Now, go.” I shoo her again, and she grumbles under her breath about being treated like a child as she stomps out of Elmon’s bedroom.

I have thought a lot over the past few days about giving the Elf king his room back. After our kiss the other day, he has been distant, too quiet. I know that he is struggling with his decision between trying to end his curse, or being with me.

I’ve spent hours in this room, agonizing over a choice that isn’t even mine to make. But I also know that Elmon will do whatever he can to keep from hurting me, which means he will only continue to fight with himself over his desire for me, and his responsibility to his kingdom.

To any outsider, it’s the simplest choice possible. Elmon needs to marry the human princess. It’s the only choice that matters, and if it works to break this curse, it’s the only one that will save so many innocent lives. If I can give him a push in the direction I know is right, I will do whatever it takes.

That’s why I’ve decided to move out of Elmon’s bedroom, and take one of the many guest rooms until I can figure out where I go from here. And, hopefully Elmon can get some sense of normalcy back so that he can regain control over the Reaper.

He told me that the Reaper has been fighting to break through when it never has before. He believes it comes from his feelings and frustrations when he’s around me. Yet another reason to give us space, and to make sure he can do what is right.

I fix the king’s plush pillows and sit down on the foot of the bed, looking around the only bedroom that I can ever remember having. It’s a feeling like saying goodbye to my childhood home, or at least, I imagine that’s what it must feel like. I rub my temples, where a small ache still pulses in my head.

Gracya comes back into the room and moves to sit beside me, worry in her eyes. “Shall I grab Madame Tanila?”

I groan and shake my head. “I’m fine, I promise. If I have to have that woman worrying over me for another second, I’ll lose my mind.
