TIN

D id you know that tin cans are not made of tin? Oh, they are coated with tin, but the “tin can” is made up of mostly steel. The tin coating is important because it resists rust (also called corrosion). Once the tin can was invented, food could be sealed and stored for months.

If you look in your pantry, chances are there are some canned food items. They are handy because the food lasts a long time, and the cans do not corrode. While most cans used for food are aluminum (#13) now, they used to be made of tin.

Tin is also responsible for the Bronze Age (around 3000 BCE–1200 BCE). Most tin today is used in alloys such as bronze or pewter, but it was during this era when humans first began using tin with copper (#29) to make bronze. Bronze is made when a little tin is added to copper, making for tougher and stronger tools and allowing humans to complete more difficult tasks.
