Chapter Thirteen
The beginning of a hike is always an interesting experience, particularly when youâre dealing with a mix of tourists from every corner of the globe. Thanks to the fact I live in Colorado, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the flow of tourists seems to be never-ending. Which, on one hand, is an excellent thing since my business depends on them to survive. Well, But⦠Letâs just say it keeps my life interesting.
I like to arrive early for a hike, taking the time to warm up at the trailhead, and find a moment of peace before everyone else arrives. Thankfully, Iâd slept well, curled between Finn and Briar, and no visions had crept into my dreams. They were currently chatting quietly in the back of the Land Rover while I worked out a kink in my calf muscle. My ears perked up as I realized they were discussing the murder.
âIâm just saying we need more information. We should go back to that trailhead and see if we can track anything. Maybe thereâs some evidence the cops didnât find. You know how Jace is. He couldnât find his way out of a wet paper bag with a guide dog.â
âBriar, we both checked the scents while we were there, while the trail was still relatively fresh. We didnât pick up on anything then.â
âBut what about that strange man we saw? You saw how Jace reacted to that information. I have a feeling about that guy. We need to do more. We canât let him get away with this.â
Finn woofed softly and shook her head as I got closer to them.
âI know how you feel, guys. Maybe Meggie will come up with something that will help us find out who the woman was. Until then, weâre kind of stuck. I donât want her to remain a Jane Doe. Someone out there is missing her.â
âCan Paul run a check on missing persons? Heâs got access to databases for the paper, doesnât he?â
I blinked at Briarâs very perceptive question. I didnât know she understood the inner-workings of human technology so well. A sinking feeling hit my stomach as I realized weâd wasted a day looking up important information, completely distracted by Paulâs new home.
âI didnât even think of that. Neither did Paul. Let me text him.â
I was tapping on my phone when a camper van rolled into the parking lot. My first hiker had arrived. I tucked my phone away and pushed off the bumper, smiling as the woman got out of her vehicle.
I put her age at around her mid-sixties, and smiled as soon as I spotted her floppy hat, festooned with many pins. Her face was free of makeup, heavily lined, and her blue eyes looked sharp as she sized me up.
âWild Peak Expeditions, right? Iâm Dot Havers. Looks like Iâm the first one here, huh?â
I held out my hand for her to shake and her grip was sturdy, even though she looked as though a stiff wind would knock her flat.
