He had been angry when he had walked out on her—more angry than she had ever seen him before, his voice bitter and caustic. She read the note again. His writing was blunt and decisive, almost slashed on to the page. She crumpled it up and threw it in the fire, then finished her dinner.

Now what? She looked around. There was no radio, no books to read—nothing. She hadn’t even brought her play script with her. She didn’t want to sit and do nothing, or she would go mad. What would the other Catriona have done, the one in the play? Taken long walks, probably, but she wasn’t going to chance that, not in this, and she still ached from the fall. Her side was bruised and sore, and she had grazed her hands in trying to save herself. She took a deep breath. The tape recorder was on a cupboard top, and there were two batteries and two tapes beside it.

She switched it on and ran back the tape in it to the beginning and set it to play. It was surprising to hear her voice describing her reactions to the hotel, and the sense of fear she had had in one room. Because it all came pouring out of her, and she hadn’t heard it replayed, it was like hearing someone else talking. The tape recorder, being a small one, distorted her voice slightly so that it was like hearing a stranger, and despite herself, she was fascinated by it. When it came to the point where Lachlan had switched it off, she stopped it. The hearing of it again had given her an idea. Why not go on? Imagine the other Catriona’s reaction when she met the fugitive for the first time. First, though, she had to picture him. She had no idea what Lachlan planned, but she could have her own image of a man for now and see what happened. This exercise was much easier than going over what had so nearly happened a short time ago.
