GUIDE TO FURTHER READING

The study of bucchero is a complex subfield within Etruscan studies. The literature on the subject is somewhat fragmented and there is no single volume that might be considered a definitive source of reference for identifying or dating bucchero. As with so much of Etruscan scholarship, many useful and important works are not in the English language and many are out of print. Helpful overviews of bucchero and its study with extensive bibliographies have been provided by Martelli 1994, Camporeale 2000, Perkins 2007: 5–10, and De Puma 2013.

A fundamental point of departure is Tom Rasmussen’s study of 40 tomb groups mainly from Cerveteri which he used to establish the first typology of bucchero from Southern Etruria. This is now a universally used standard for identifying and publishing bucchero (Rasmussen 1979, reprinted in 2006). Apart from providing a practical typology, it also contains insightful observations and discussion. Much work on bucchero has focused on individual collections and dozens of Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum volumes contain bucchero vases. Earlier volumes tend to publish only a brief description and a photograph, but some more recent volumes contain important discussion and analysis (Laurens and Touchefeu 1979; Gran-Aymerich 1982; 1992; Wehgartner 1983; De Puma 1996). Collections published outside this series also contain important discussion and commentary (Camporeale 1991; Regter 2003; Capponi and Ortenzi 2007; Perkins 2007; Bruni 2014). Regional productions of bucchero have been made accessible by a number of colloquia over the years that have resulted in edited volumes (Bonghi Jovino 1993, Naso 2004 and papers in the third volume of Officina Etruscologia).
