Chapter Eleven

Mimi

I felt like I was walking around in a fog all morning. The drive-by had me rattled. Not that it wouldn’t rattle your average person, but it brought back memories of working with the FBI agents and learning about my dead husband Dominic’s family and their shifty business practices. It was a bad day when I learned the truth about Dominic’s plane crash. The bullet that whizzed by my head. The fruit stand. I thought I’d put that all behind me. I had. This was not a setback, it was not.

My mom and Uta had cleaned up the breakfast trays in the living room, and then Mom sat in Cortnie’s office with her. When I walked in to see what Cortnie had, my mom wouldn’t even look at me.

“Mom, we’re not going to have any investigative work for you today. If you want to work with Uta, she can show you how we record and file paperwork.”

My mom rolled her eyes and walked out.

I called after her. “Everyone in the office does paperwork, Mom.”

“She’s worried about last night,” Cortnie whispered.

“What are you whispering for?” I whispered back.

“She didn’t want me to tell you.”

“I think it’s obvious.” I opened the laptop on Cortnie’s desk. “It’s not really part of the job, but it happens. But then again, it only happens when we get messed up with the wrong people.”

“This one feels really wrong.” Cortnie’s features twisted.

“It sure does.” I typed in the password and logged into the files Cortnie had uploaded the previous night.

“How was your date with Adrianna?”

“It actually did feel like a date. I even have a really nice bottle of wine from it.”

“Ooh la la.” She winked at me.

I laughed. It felt good. “I learned a little about Haris. He doesn’t like to take no for an answer. So me saying he’d been pressuring me to go on a date with him and see him exclusively wasn’t a stretch.”

“Nice.” Cortnie had taken over the laptop, knowing better what to navigate.

“Yeah, but even though she wasn’t openly hostile, there was an undertone of something I couldn’t quite place. Not jealousy, or hatred, maybe something in between.” I wracked my brain trying to find a word to describe her demeanor when it came to Haris.

“Did they date at one time?” Cortnie had what she wanted and sat back to listen.

“No. At least that’s what she said. According to her, it was forbidden by her father. Haris was in business with Beck, and he had a hard and fast rule about mixing business and pleasure.”

“His daughter got no pleasure from his business dealings?”

I wiggled my brows. “Something like that.”

“The tie between Haris and Beck could be interesting. Maybe something between them went bad?”

I pondered it for a moment. “Bad enough to kill for? To lose everything if he got caught?”

“True. Besides, wasn’t he still at the preview at the time of the murder? He has an airtight alibi.”

“He’s rich. Money buys a lot of things.” I reminded her.

“Is he really that rich? He owns a restaurant.
