Rowlandson would have been familiar with such chaos. One of his prints – perhaps a fond memory of his youth – shows three students visited by two elderly men, who are throwing their hands up in disbelief. But are these students hard at work? Nose in a book? Silently ruminating? No such diligence is found here: these students are in a drunken slumber. The table is covered with a large punchbowl and drinking glasses. Mortarboards litter the floor. But, as if to say, ‘Such is life’, Rowlandson adds a quote from Cicero: ‘O Tempora, O Mores!’* Heavy drinking and raucous conviviality were essential to this era of excess.
