Damien’s face is ashen. His eyes shift around the room. No one offers him support. Damien holds Mags’ hand. She emerges from the shock. Revolted by touching such a person, Mags shoves Damien away.

An expectant silence weighs down on us. The wait for the impending storm is unbearable.

‘Why do you have these photographs of Tamsin?’ Lily aims and fires at Damien.

Damien snatches the file from Lily. She’s unprepared for the aggressiveness from a usually gentle man. Lily stumbles. Damien attempts to catch her.

Lily rights herself. ‘Back off,’ she says, holding out a hand against Damien.

‘Why have you been snooping into my private life?’ Damien asks.

‘I can’t believe you’re trying to shift the blame onto me. I found these hidden at the bottom of your wardrobe. Sorry.’ Lily glances at Mags. ‘I shouldn’t have been rifling through your bedroom but I had a hunch about Damien. I needed to see if I was right.’

Mags doesn’t respond. Privacy is obviously the least of her concerns.

‘Unfortunately, Damien is too good to be true,’ Lily says. ‘Whenever he looks at you, Mags, he either appears amazed or troubled. When Damien was telling us about Tamsin’s body, he acted strangely. Damien wrung his hands at any mention of the park where Tamsin went missing. You’d be crap at poker, mate.’

‘See? You can focus when you try, Lil,’ I add.

‘Not relevant right now,’ Steve replies, glaring at Damien.

Damien stares at the floor.

‘When did you take those photographs?’ Hayden asks Damien. I’m surprised by how level Hayden’s voice is considering the circumstances.

Damien’s fingers tussle with each other.

‘Stop fidgeting and answer the question!’ Mags shouts.

‘I took them the day Tamsin disappeared,’ Damien replies.

Steve advances towards Damien, fists prepared for a fight.
