Dema Liman-Ancient Elaea

The Bakir Çayi, Caicus, or Kaikos River, Homer’s Scamander, flows to its sandy, muddy mouth. East of the mouth are the salt, sand, and mud flats, extending to the Dema Liman (lagoon). Farther east, is the village of Reşadiye. This lagoon is the ancient seaport, Elaea (Greek: Elaia), but perhaps it went out of use about the second century A.D., when it became too shallow for ships to enter.
