During the jury selection process, Hennessy had identified two strong leaders. The first, juror number five, was likely to side with the prosecution, and the second, juror number ten, was likely to side with the defense. Number five was a straight-laced retiree—tall, fit, and strong—who’d spent his entire life working for various government agencies and had never even so much as had a parking ticket. He was likely to believe anything that came out of Garrett’s mouth. Juror number ten appeared equally as strong in character—he’d spent his twenties in the Air Force, but after that he spent years fighting for every dollar, fighting to survive, balancing on the line of the law.

The jurors weren’t twelve individuals submitting twelve different votes. If that were the case, a jury would be split up, kept in different rooms, and left to themselves to vote. Rather, a jury was a panel of people who worked towards a general consensus. A strong character could lead those people to change their minds, convinced by their passion and delivery, rather than the factual evidence.

As soon as Garrett finished his opening statement, Hennessy stood and walked to the lectern near the jury box, ready to deliver his opening.

When invited by Judge Blow to begin, Hennessy looked to the jury, nodded, and then began.
