THE REPUBLIC

High Hopes and Vicious Betrayals

Despite the hopes of the revolutionaries, there would be no smooth transition to a modern nation-state. Imperialist powers still occupied key ports and demanded the reparations promised them by the Qing. Military leaders and local powerholders, the bane of weak states since the Zhou dynasty, threatened the central authority of the new government from the start. Corruption didn’t take long to set in, either. Turbulent and polarising, the early republican period produced the social, intellectual, cultural and political ferment that would set the stage for the rise of Chinese communism.
