Perched on a hill, overlooking magnificent landscaped gardens, the Château de Combourg was the childhood home of the writer Chateaubriand (now buried at St-Malo), and remains in the hands of his descendants. The castle’s Tour du Chat is supposedly haunted by a ghost taking the form of a cat; Chateaubriand himself claimed it was haunted by the ghost of the wooden leg of a former lord – and that the cat was merely an acquaintance of this phantasmal limb. The entrance to the château is not where you expect it to be: turn right at the end of Combourg’s main square instead of continuing straight towards the keep, and it’s a short way up on the left.
