Sewing a Straight (Butted) Border

This type of border is very popular as it is easy to sew. It doesn’t matter whether you sew the top and bottom borders on first and then the side borders, or vice versa, as long as it is consistent throughout a quilt.

1 Once the border strips are cut, pin and sew them to the quilt top. Place the top border right sides together with the quilt top and sew together with a 1⁄4in (6mm) seam. Press towards the darker fabric. Trim the edges flush with the quilt top. Add the bottom border in the same way.

2 Now sew on the side borders, checking the length measurement one final time before you begin. Press to the darker fabric. Trim the edges flush with the quilt top.
