CHAPTER 39
New York, April 21, 62 days
It had been a month since Joanne had last seen Keith. Not a day went by that her mind didnât replay that Sunday morning when they were to meet for brunch. What could have happened? She had memorized the letter that was delivered.
Dear Joanne,
Forgive me but I am no longer able to keep you safe from all my woe. I will not be joining you today. You spoke about being true to yourself and so I must go to find that truth. Iâm afraid it is best that I no longer exist. Be careful of strangers who want to know where I am.
I love you,
Keith
When I consider how my life is spent,
Ere half my days in this dark world and wide,
And that one talent which is death to hide
Lodged with me useless, through my soul more bent
To serve therewith my maker
Joanne reread what she needed to know. He loves me.

In truth, Keith Jessup no longer existed. In his place a new man appeared, one he called Samuel Hartlib, a bearded scholar with long black hair that had gray streaks and heavy horn-rimmed glasses that hid his soft blue eyes. Samuel Hartlib looked older and walked with a limp. Perhaps most telling was his constant checking of the environs, as if trying to spot danger coming from behind or before his path. But at least he was free to do what had to be done. There was no other way. Keith had gone over it a million times, but if he was to seek the justice that was due, he had no choice. There could no longer be a Keith Jessup. Once the Braniffs were delivered it was as if he had crossed the Rubicon. They would be coming after him. That meant he had to give her up. He owed her that, although it broke his heart, and worse, perhaps hers, but at least she would be safe.
