ROB ROY
The Waldorf Astoria hotel’s proximity to Broadway theaters provided great cocktail name fodder at the turn of the twentieth century. While some call to mind the theatergoing clientele, others harken back to the plays themselves. The altruistic, kilt-wearing Scotsman protagonist Rob Roy inspired bartenders to swap the rye or bourbon in a Manhattan (this page) for Scotch whisky. While the eponymous drink references a true renegade, it’s actually a touch leaner and meeker than its Manhattan counterpart. Since the Scotch gets fortified with sweet vermouth and bitters, a blended version will more than suffice here.
