A sailor stands guard with bayonet fixed on California Street between Mason and Taylor overlooking the downtown section. The Call Building can be seen on the far right, and the top of Grace Church tower is barely visible above sidewalk, far left. An Arnold Genthe photo. (California Palace of the Legion of Honor)

View down Stockton to Market on Sunday, April 22. Every phase of life was reduced to a primitive level. If proportional damage had been wreaked on New York City, all the island of Manhattan from the Battery to 125th Street, a few stray buildings excepted, would have been leveled. Actually, the destroyed area was equal to what lies within New York’s Fifth and Ninth avenues between Twenty-third and 103rd streets. (Bancroft Library)
