Well, as it turns out, keystone habits are not a Starbucks invention. It’s an approach highlighted and named by Charles Duhigg in his insightful book The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business. In the book he cites the example of Alcoa, which identified safety habits as key to the turnaround of the company in the 1980s.

The point is that, in this conversation with MBA students, where I was supposedly the expert, I learned something of value. The process of questioning the audience had produced new knowledge for all of us.

Later, I opened the floor to questions. Again, the very nature of the questions themselves gave me information about the next generation of Dunkin’ customers and, no doubt, leaders.
