Olives will flower and fruit prolifically when grown as bonsai. These are the ripe fruit, which develop during autumn.

How to look after them

REPOTTING: Repot every 3–4 years in spring, using free-draining compost.

PRUNING AND PINCHING: Prune in late summer after flowering and when fruits have formed.

WIRING: Olives can be wired at any time although they do not need much wiring as bonsai.

WATERING: As they are Mediterranean plants, olives can withstand some drought. However, they still need to be watered regularly. Let the soil dry out between each watering.

FEEDING: Feed with a general fertilizer in early spring, and with a low-nitrogen fertilizer in mid- and late summer.

BE AWARE: Olives are easy to grow and are not prone to many pest and disease problems. The combination of wet roots and frost is a killer for olive bonsai.
