"I believe that I shall leave the events of tomorrow to speak for themselves," he said after a long silence, "but there are a few key matters of background you should know. For instance: there is someone dying... someone of consequence to you. " I looked up in sudden concern, for this was not the type of thing I had expected to hear - but Merlyn hushed me with a wave and continued.

"...I ask only that you listen carefully to whatever may be said at Glastonbury tomorrow, for among those words you may find answers to questions that have long puzzled you. Do you remember the Beltane fires which we watched from atop Cadbury hill?" I nodded. "Well - come morning, we will visit that very spot upon which they were kindled, and more. The Christian priests who now dwell there, have re-named the island, as well as building a great church in hopes of supplanting all other gods save theirs alone. Fortunately however, the ancient magic has not been driven wholly from the land, and The Lady still dwells in Avalon with a great congregation who serve only the Earth Goddess - mother of all. They call themselves the Sisterhood of the Dar Abba, which means 'women who wear dark robes,' and although their methods of magical growth differ from our own, their spiritual laws and ours are one in origin & theory." Merlyn tucked the pipe carefully into a leather pouch, and closed his eyes so comfortably, that I wondered if he was bedded for the night.

"How does the priestess-magic of Avalon differ from that of the Druids?" I interjected, too unsettled to let matters rest until morning.

"That," Merlyn replied without opening his eyes, "is a big question that began long ago, when mankind was truly at one with the Earth on which he lived - and patterned his life and ways upon the symmetry and balance he observed within it. To the founding fathers, there was one outstanding natural division which was evident in all aspects of creation: that THE SEEN AND UN-SEEN WORLDS WERE CAST ACCORDING TO THE LAW OF DUALITY. This simply means that everything we can see or sense in any of the three circles of being, belongs to one of the two great opposites. These two basic forces are easily seen in the world around us:"
