Tobias wasn’t sure if he should believe his sudden good fortune. Maybe this was all some strange dream caused by the fever. But that kiss… that kiss had been alive, fiery, and it had shot through his body, quicker than the fever. No, it had all been irrevocably real.

It was only a day after that amazing kiss, and he felt like his old self again. The fever had passed, and he felt steady and strong. He dressed quickly and put on his hat, which Angel had returned the day before. It still smelled a little like him. Perhaps he should be wary of his obvious attachment to Angel and how it seemed to grow with each passing day. Perhaps he should remember that creating a dalliance with a subordinate, especially a vagabond, was a surefire way to trouble. Perhaps he should remember that Angel was a bloody eagle skin changer.

Sure, he remembered all that. The problem was he didn’t much care. He wanted Angel. He had a powerful hunger for the eagle, and it had exploded the moment he realized Angel wanted him as well.

Smiling in anticipation Tobias shut the door behind him and jogged down the steps to the sheriff’s office. The outlaws still lounged in their cell, and Tobias wondered why the Texas Rangers were taking so damn long to come and collect them. He’d grown tired of their presence. He’d yet to receive even one telegram from Denver. Damn rangers, spending all their time rounding up Injuns.

Grumbling, he walked over to his desk. The front door opened, and his mood instantly brightened when he saw it was Angel.

“Morning, Deputy,” Tobias said, making sure his eyes showed his appreciation. If the dull flush that touched Angel’s cheeks was an indication, he saw it.

“Morning, Sheriff.”

The day became rather torturous. They did their usual patrol, and Tobias made sure to show Angel, without words, that he was fit and ready to become much more physical with his deputy. He didn’t think his effort was lost on Angel. Their conversations were guarded but full of meaning.

Since neither of their living arrangements accommodated a discreet late-night tryst, Tobias decided to take Angel to the wooded area outside of town. They had supper in the saloon, and Tobias brushed off Scarlett’s advances. She pouted, but like a practiced whore, she didn’t let it keep her down. Many other men wanted time with her. They waited until it was very late, and nearly pitch-black, before sneaking out like bandits. Tobias helped Angel onto Shadow Dawn, seating him behind. He clicked his tongue, and the mare cantered out of town. The moon was a crescent, and the stars were hidden. It was enough light to see by but also allowed them the cover they needed.

It took too long for Tobias’s liking, but they finally reached a good hidden area set against the hills with trees covering every side. The trees had blocked most of the rain from falling to the ground, leaving it semidry. Tobias unsaddled Shadow Dawn and patted her rear.
