You can encourage the urine to start flowing again by contracting and releasing your pelvic muscles, upping your intake of fluids, and placing hot or cold packs on your perineum (whichever triggers your urge to urinate).

If it’s good old-fashioned fear that’s holding you back, you might want to try drinking plenty of liquids to dilute the acidity of your urine, straddling the toilet saddle style when you urinate, urinating while you pour water across your perineum (you can use either a peri-bottle or a bowl), or—if you get really desperate—urinating while you’re standing in the shower.

Don’t worry that you’ll be stuck with this problem forever: you’ll soon find yourself dashing to the bathroom at regular intervals as your body goes about its postpartum housekeeping, getting rid of all the extra fluids you accumulated during your pregnancy.

If you experience intense burning after urination or an intense, painful, and unusually frequent urge to urinate, it could be because you’ve developed a urinary tract infection, in which case you’ll want to drink plenty of unsweetened cranberry juice and contact your caregiver to arrange for treatment.
