One of the largest asteroids in our Solar System, Vesta is located between Mars and Jupiter. This pockmarked and potato-shaped asteroid has a diameter of about 325 miles (525 kilometers), with a dramatic crater in its southern region.

Bennu

Just over two decades ago in September 1999, astronomers discovered the asteroid that became known as Bennu. NASA then developed and launched a mission to visit the asteroid and collect a sample that will be returned to Earth in 2023. Bennu was formed when many rocks in the Solar System became compressed through gravity about 4.5 billion years ago. Because of this asteroid’s advanced age, scientists are eager to literally get their hands on pieces of Bennu to learn more about the earliest days of our planetary neighborhood. Bennu is a much smaller asteroid than Vesta, with a diameter of about 1,610 feet (490 meters). This is roughly a bit more than once around a standard quarter-mile track.
