Te’o was an extraordinary college player who won several major college defensive awards his senior year, including those named for Chuck Bednarik, Bronko Nagurski, and Walter Camp. For 3 straight seasons, Te’o collected more than 100 tackles a year. It was suggested he might become the rare defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy (he finished second in the voting).
