“No,” she managed to whisper against his lips. “I’m not ready.”

He kissed her softly, but he did not remove his hand and step away from her. “I’m not going to make love to you with my body,” he said. “I only want to give you pleasure.”

His brow furrowed. “You cannot what, Lucinda? Take pleasure from my touch? I think you can,” he argued. “I think you were. I think you were only a stroke away from—”

“I cannot lose control!”

He took a step toward her. “That’s what it is, Lucinda. That’s what two people do when they share their bodies with one another. They trade control for emotion. They feel instead of think. They trust, if only for that moment in time; they trust totally in one another. You know that, don’t you?”

She knew nothing about lovemaking, nothing except what he’d taught her or, rather, tried to teach her. If she told him the truth, if he knew that by being in danger herself she had perhaps put him in danger as well, he might turn her out tonight. She couldn’t leave Sebastian. Not yet. If she didn’t break Jackson’s curse, she couldn’t leave Sebastian at all, she realized. Not with a man she didn’t know for certain she could trust.

“Our arrangement did not include you pleasuring me,” she reminded him. “Or me pleasuring you.”

“So far, it hasn’t included you holding to your part of the bargain, either,” he said, and his voice was tight now.
