It took more effort to stand than she thought it would, but stand she did. Then Anne was washing her in a rush. The cool water felt wonderful. June slid into her chemise.

“No corset. Doctor’s orders,” Anne reminded her.

“Of course.” Skipping the restrictive piece of clothing would help her dress faster and relieve pressure from her torso. Then the skirts came and finally the dress.

“We’ll keep the layers light,” Anne whispered.

But as the minutes passed, June cared less and less about what Anne had to say. Standing had taken the strength out of her. Her bones shook as though they’d gone unused for a century or two, and her muscles felt as though they no longer wished to do their part.

Anne finally helped her back into the bed, and June’s body was moist with perspiration. Noticing this, Anne used another cloth to wipe down June’s skin and the wind from the open window cooled her body immensely.

The sheet had been just placed back on her lower half when Mark waltzed into the room once more—just as he promised he would.
