According to the World Health Organization (WHO), motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for Americans when they travel outside the United States—so put those movie-based imaginings of kidnappings and food poisoning in foreign countries to rest.

Here at home, car accident deaths are increasing. In 2015, the latest year for which data is available, a staggering one hundred people died each day in automobile crashes in the United States.

What about unsuspecting bystanders? From 2014 to 2015, pedestrian deaths increased by 10 percent, putting the deaths of those on the sidelines at its highest number in two decades. Roughly fifteen Americans die this way each day on average.

You’ve probably heard the saying that you’re more likely to die on the way to the airport than in a plane crash . . . that’s absolutely correct, and it’s never been more true. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s research shows that the number of accidents and deaths in every single one of these categories is on the rise:
