Dante had to be taken to the hospital to get an MRI, so I was left alone with a house full of foot soldiers. Giovanni had gone to the office, while Raphael went to the police station to file a report about what happened; the cops had already been called about the explosion, so unfortunately, their involvement couldnât be avoided.
I was surfing the darknet and talking to some buddies from a hacker collective message board regarding the payload, but no one had been successful in decrypting it. I was also waiting for Dante to come home from the hospital. I hadnât talked to him since he sent me up to my room, and I was so worried about him that I struggled to pay attention to the work I was trying to do to distract myself.
Just as I was about to pick up the phone to call Nurse Carol for some news about Dante, all the lights turned off. I knew right away what was happening. Within the household, I heard shouts and clamoring as the soldiers tried to figure out what was going on. I didnât hesitate. I opened the drawer and picked up the semi-automatic pistol I had stashed there. I placed the gun on the nightstand before leaping out of bed. I arranged the pillows vertically and covered them with the comforter so it would look like someone was lying there. Grabbing the gun, I made my way to the walk-in closet and waited.
Downstairs, there was screaming and gunfire. My heart leapt into my throat. The thought of casualties in the family compound was a horror. There were dozens of gunshots.
I pressed my back to the wall of the closet and kept my weapon at the ready.
When the noise suddenly stopped, I got myself mentally prepared. I knew what I had to do and I had every intention of doing it. I wasnât going to let these bastards take me back to the Valentis.
When my door burst open as it was kicked in, I watched from a gap in the closet door as four men in dark clothing gathered around my bed before unloading their guns into the pillows. Thatâs when I sprang out of my hiding place and shot them, nailing each one in the head. I missed on the fourth one, and the bullet hit his neck instead. I zig-zagged around the dead goons and pointed my gun down at the man fighting for his life on the floor. He was wearing a ski mask.
âWho sent you?â I asked him, though it was no use because he was choking on his own blood. I decided to end his misery and shot him in the face. The blood spatter was immense, but I was too in the moment to care or to feel horrified. I knew there were more men coming. That was more important.
I prepared myself, tensing my grip on the gun as I heard more footsteps coming up the stairs. I had eleven bullets in the magazine and one in the hole.
