Kendall

“The hardest-working woman at Diablo’s, and the prettiest.”

Kendall hadn’t even realized she’d fallen asleep until she heard Simon’s voice as he entered the room. It took a few seconds for her to gather herself and turn around. She smiled and pointed. “Is that a part of your company-issued uniform?”

Simon touched the flashing Santa hat he wore in place of his usual baseball cap. “This is the holiday flair I opted to wear. You like it?”

Kendall nodded. “I do.”

“I mean, it’s not as fly as yours, but it’s still festive,” he said, referring to the red-sequined beret on her head. “I see yours has a little more international appeal, mademoiselle.”

“Oui,” Kendall said with a French accent as she posed in her chair.

“A little birdie told me you and Amber are in charge of the Diablo Christmas Soiree this year. I can only imagine what the two of you have planned,” he said as he unloaded the cart.

“We are,” was the best response Kendall could give because Amber had been pretty much giving her the cold shoulder for the past week. She had tried explaining and apologizing for not being available on the day they had designated to finalize the party plans, but Amber hadn’t been receptive. The party was just days away, and her friend had barely spoken to her in days.

As if she could sense that they were talking about her, Amber appeared in the doorway. “Kendall, Mrs. Brooks is here for her dress. It’s not on the rack. Do you have it?”

“It’s right here.” Kendall reached for the gown she’d finished hours earlier.

“Is it ready?” Amber asked.

“It is. I just haven’t had a chance to bring it out,” Kendall replied.

“I’m sure.” Amber took the gown and exited just as quickly as she’d entered.

Simon gave Kendall a concerned look. “She okay? Normally, she got jokes for days.”

“She’s fine. Everyone is kinda on edge around here. You know how stressful the holidays can be,” Kendall told him.

“I work for FedEx. You ain’t gotta tell me. I get cussed out daily for stuff that ain’t even my fault. But I just wear my hat and continue making spirits bright.”

Kendall laughed. “You definitely do that.”

“Glad I can put a smile on your pretty face.” Simon winked. “Maybe one day you’ll give me a chance to do it outside of this place.”

Kendall’s eyes widened. She couldn’t tell if he was joking or not. “Are you asking me out on a date?”

“Are you saying you’d go out on a date with me if I asked you?” Simon countered.

“I guess you’re gonna have to ask and find out,” Kendall told him.

“Okay.” He grinned.

Kendall waited for what she thought was going to be some sort of invitation, but instead, before leaving the room, Simon said, “Au revoir, Mademoiselle Kendall.”

Confused, Kendall went back to working. It didn’t matter how fine he was; she didn’t have time to play whatever kind of game Simon was playing. Her plate wasn’t just full it was overflowing. She had a debutante
