Like judo, mixed martial arts originated from a principle that would seem to resist weight classes: pitting any style of fighter against another. But MMA overseers realized that the “outlaw” sport needed to be seen as more regulated. In 2001 the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board issued a set of rules (including weight distinctions) that have since been adopted universally.
