THE MILITIA MOVEMENT: POPULAR CONSTITUTIONALISTS WITH GUNS

Timothy McVeigh killed in the name of the Constitution. Before setting off a truck bomb that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people, McVeigh wrote a letter entitled “Constitutional Defenders” that sought to justify his actions: “We members of the citizen’s militias do not bear our arms to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow those who PERVERT the Constitution.”67 McVeigh believed that antigovernment violence was justified as retaliation for what he considered the government’s constitutional violations, especially those of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. “ATF,” McVeigh wrote, “all you tyrannical mother fuckers will swing in the wind one day for your treasonous actions against the Constitution of the United States.”68
