Clifford overtook Eleanor as she raced up the stone steps to the folly’s roof terrace. Face down in the rain gully on a patch of crimson snow was the motionless, contorted form of a man.

‘Oh, gracious!’ she gasped.

He crouched down, feeling for a pulse.

‘Too late,’ he muttered gravely.

Her head fell to her chest. ‘It’s Brae. Stabbed with a pair of hedging shears!’

Overcome with sorrow for a young life taken so cruelly, she turned her face up to the cascade of snowflakes and sent words heavenwards that he might rest in peace.

Clifford stood up slowly, and, gently turning her away from the sight, offered her his good elbow. ‘My lady. We need to get you back to the house.’

‘But—’

‘Whoever did this will be long gone.’

She shivered. ‘Or back in the house themselves. They’ve killed twice now, but we have no idea who it is.’

‘Hence the need for extreme prudence.’ He steered her respectfully towards the steps.

Before they could start down, she stopped. ‘It’s too awful, Clifford. To leave him so alone like that. In the snow.’

Without a word, he returned to the body and laid his coat over it. He rejoined her. ‘My lady, there really is nothing more we can do for him.’

‘Yes, there is,’ her impassioned words flew out. ‘We can make sure whoever did this faces justice!’

He nodded as they continued back. ‘I suggest then that we call Chief Inspector Seldon to come and examine the scene first. Trevilick, by his own admission, is unused to this type of crime, whereas—’

She sighed. ‘Hugh is all too used to it!’

With the utmost stealth, they returned to the house where Clifford quietly rang the inn while Eleanor kept watch. His hunch was right, and the landlady answered guardedly. Once she was convinced her butler wasn’t the authorities trying to find out if she was operating rather lenient opening hours over the festive season, she fetched Seldon from his room. After the briefest of exchanges, Clifford put the phone down.

Then it was a case of waiting…
