CHAPTER 16
âThank you so much for coming, Ms. Lupa,â Wynona said with an extra loud voice. The old dragon shifter wasnât as young as she used to be.
âCall me Gendyl,â Gendyl shouted, though the volume was unintentional. She leaned in and tried to whisper, but it was still far above normal speaking tones. âCalling me Ms. Lupa makes me feel old.â
âIâll remember that,â Wynona said kindly. âSee you soon.â With the shifter gone, Wynona took a deep breath. Her shop was finally empty. The day had been a long one. After the reading of the will, the fighting of the family and then having to come back to work...Wynona was exhausted.
Lusgu grumbled as he walked through the dining room, his broom, as always, in his wake. âDark happenings,â he mumbled. âDark, dark, dark.â
Wynona frowned. âLusgu?â
He paused and turned to glare at her.
âWhatâs dark?â
Lusgu shook his head. âDark, dark, dark.â
Wynona threw up her hands when he disappeared down the hall. Getting a straight answer from the brownie was sometimes an Olympic sport and most of the words he did mutter didnât make any sense on their own. âDark,â Wynona murmured. She opened her mind to Violet. Any idea what heâs talking about?
The fact that itâs night time?
Wynona refrained from rolling her eyes, but barely. âI donât think thatâs it.â
Violet sauntered in from the kitchen. How am I supposed to know?
âYou get along with him better than anyone else,â Wynona pointed out.
Violet smirked and smoothed down her fur. People canât resist me.
A snort broke free from Wynona that Violet definitely didnât appreciate.
Is Wolfy coming tonight?
âHe usually drops by for dinner,â Wynona said, using her fingers to begin cleaning up. There was something so satisfying about watching all the dishes float through the air. No wonder creatures always used their magic. âLook, I remembered,â Wynona said with a grin.
Violet gave her a slow clap.
âYouâre in a mood tonight.â
Violet paused. Somethingâs in the air. She shook all over. Sorry. Iâll try to be nicer.
Wynona frowned and looked toward the window. It was dusk, Lusgu was muttering and Violet said something was in the air. Walking to the window, Wynona put her hand against it. Purple began floating like mist through the air, curling and creating beautiful patterns. It dissipated only a few inches from her hand. âI donât feel anything,â Wynona said.
Maybe itâs an animal thing? Ask Rascal if he feels it.
Wynona closed her eyes. Rascal?
Where are you? he shot back, his voice hard.
Wynona jerked back, though Rascal wasnât actually yelling at her. The shop.
Stay there. Iâm coming.
Wynona turned to look at Violet. The mouse scrambled over, climbing Wynona.
I think he felt it, she said.
âI think youâre right.â Wynona waited at the window, her heart beating faster than normal, but if she worked, she could feel Rascal getting closer. Within minutes he was right in front of the building and Wynona moved to let him in. âWhatâs going on?â she asked automatically, closing the door behind him. âOof!â
Rascal tugged her into his chest, nearly smothering her against his uniform.
