Ally, shocked to the core, couldn’t bring herself to speak for a moment. ‘Ian Grant?’ she managed eventually.

‘That’s him,’ Linda confirmed sadly.

‘Oh my God!’ Ally could scarcely believe what she was hearing. ‘Only yesterday he gave me a lift in the Land Rover when I got caught in the rain down at Fin’s Fish.’

‘Just thank your lucky stars you weren’t in it today,’ Linda remarked, looking equally shocked.

‘Oh, Linda!’ Ally exclaimed. ‘It’s not that I knew him, of course, because I’ve only met him a couple of times, but he seemed a nice man. This is just awful! Surely he must have known that road like the back of his hand? How could he miss the bend or whatever?’

‘He’s been more than twenty years with the earl, I believe, so he’d know every stone on the road,’ Linda said thoughtfully. She sipped her drink. ‘Perhaps there was a fault with the Land Rover? Or maybe he had a heart attack?’

Ally thought for a moment. ‘He said he was going to speak to Rigby about something, something important.’ She shivered. ‘Perhaps someone knew that?’

‘Who would know?’

‘I’ve no idea but, if he told me, then there’s a good chance he told someone else.’

Linda grimaced. ‘Like his boss? The earl?’

‘I can’t believe the earl has any part in this. Anyway, we don’t know exactly what happened, and it’s entirely possible that Ian Grant had a heart attack or something.’

‘But why wouldn’t the earl be a suspect again? Are you sure you’re not a bit biased? Aren’t you a little bit interested in him?’

‘Not even the tiniest bit!’ Ally spoke truthfully, but she realised how it might look to other people. ‘He’s become a friend, Linda, and nothing more.’

Linda shrugged. ‘I believe you, but the gossipmongers round here won’t.’

‘Let them gossip!’ Ally said, draining her Prosecco. ‘They’ll have plenty to talk about now anyway. Thanks for the drink. Time I went home.’
