Ifelt naked leaving the barn without grabbing one of the weapons, but Wells made it clear that if the TRON leadership found me packing, that would be perceived as suspicious, at the very least.

I started toward my car as Wells walked back to his Jeep Wrangler.

“Hey, where are you going?” he shouted.

“I’m following you to the training ground, right?”

Wells waved me on toward his vehicle. “Neither of us will be bringing our vehicles there.”

“What do you mean?” I asked as I approached his vehicle.

“Get in and you’ll see.”

I sat in the passenger seat waiting for Wells to elaborate, but he just started the Jeep up and drove before turning off and taking a one-lane, gravel-filled road. Good thing we were driving in his Jeep, because I didn’t think the Volvo would have handled the massive dips along the way.

“So, how far away is this place?” I asked.

He took his time before answering. “There’s a boat waiting a few miles away. We’ll leave my Jeep behind and board the boat.”

I nodded.

Wells briefly glanced my way. “So, Dahl didn’t tell me much about you other than you’re from the States and were hired to find the bomber and that poor Hansen family.”

“What do you want to know?” I asked as we bounced up and down on the road—if you could actually call it that.

“Who do you really work for, and what qualifies you to solve this case?”

Wells took a hard right, and I had to grab the handle above my head to prevent from lunging forward. “You’d have to ask the people who hired me.”

“And who would that be?” he asked.

I shrugged. “I’m an independent contractor. In most cases, I have no clue, but this time, I’m guessing it’s Kripos.”

“If it really is Kripos, then you must be exceptional at what you do.” He paused. “If you don’t mind me asking, what exactly do you do?”

“I make very bad people who hurt others wish they hadn’t.”

He started laughing. “Now, that’s a mission statement I can get behind.”

Wells suddenly stopped the Jeep and said, “We’re here.”

It wasn’t easy seeing in the dark. The full moon was concealed by the thick cloud cover. I got out and followed Wells as he led the way through thick brush, his phone’s flashlight illuminating our way.

“So, what’s your impression of Norway so far?” he asked as we continued on our way toward the nearby fjord.

“Beautiful. Clean. But cold.”

“Does the cold bother you?”

“I live in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, so Oslo isn’t much different, to be honest. But this place is a tad too cold for my liking.”

Wells chuckled. “It’ll be even colder on the island we’re headed to.” He pointed to a dim light in the distance. “That’s the boat we’re taking there.”

I followed him as we made our way onto an old fishing boat.

“Looks like this boat has been through one or two fishing expeditions in its time,” I joked. “What’s the matter, can’t TRON afford a better vessel?”

Wells didn’t crack a smile. “Actually, they have some rather large donors.
